Playa del Carmen Destination

At Playa del Carmen, the endless beach is the main attraction. Refugees from Cancún’s glitz and glamour at first sought out funky Isla Mujeres or guileless Cozumel, both island of great charm but not as blessed as Playa in the way of  beaches, This town hs both the magnificent beaches and the charm. 

In a manner of speaking, there are two Playas; the second being the huge 875 acre development in Playacar. Here you will find a large beachfront hotel, several large all-inclusive resorts, a championship golf course and, for anyone who might be interested, attractive lots for sale.  

Heading down to Playa. As it is known to its locals for lunch and a swim, or better still, for a dip and then lunch, is a grand way to get to know the town. The same turquoise Caribbean waxes the same powdery, white sand at Playa as it does at Cancún but, with an offshore reef and Cozumel to break the waves, the surf is usually more gentle. The short distance to the reef means good snorkeling and gear is available for rent at any of the dive shops on the beach, as well as lockers and showers. The shops, of course, also offer scuba diving, which they claim is the best in the Mexican Caribbean. Diving usually works up an appetite and Playa bustles with places to sate it.  

The main thoroughfare is known as Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, but Manhattan it is not. To begin with, it is a lot more fun and, in many ways, more cosmopolitan. Italian, French and German are overheard just as easily as English or Spanish. 

Apart from a few beach-side cafés, Quinta Avenida is the town’s main restaurant row, featuring a large selection of eateries that will satisfy most every craving-ranging from tacos, fajitas, pizzas, steaks, lobster to vegetarian plates and Thai specialties. 
 
Even though Playa has been holding the record for the fateste growing city in México, its main downtown area is only about ten blocks long, so it is fun to stroll down the Quinta Avenida to check out where to dine. Some of the most appealing places are just off the main drag. 

After a meal, the time has come to stroll about again, this time to inspect the stores. There are a few boutiques featuring an excellent assortment of handicrafts from all over México. Specialty shops in Playa, however, truly live up to their name; they feature masks, embroidered clothing and handcrafted jewelry that would be virtually impossible to find in New York, Paris or Rome. Rumor has it that dusk and darkness bring out the best in Playa. Happy hours, which can last for a generous 120 minutes, get under way at every tavern in town and the village becomes one vast, international, singles bar. 

In addition to the enormous luxury hotels, the town boasts many small hotels, some right on the beach. Playa makes visitors want to stay over, but if they can’t, buses and vans run back to Cancún throughout the night. 

From Playa, it is only a jump to Cozumel. The regularly scheduled ferry takes less than an hour to cross, and arrives in the heart of the island. A five minute taxi ride away in Xcaret. Some Maya archeological sites are a bit farther, but they are well worth the visit.
