At Playa del Carmen, the endless beach is the main attraction. Refugees from Cancún’s glitz and glamour at first sought out funky Isla Mujeres or guileless Cozumel, both island of great charm but not as blessed as Playa in the way of beaches, This town hs both the magnificent beaches and the charm.

Heading down to Playa. As it is known to its locals for lunch and a swim, or better still, for a dip and then lunch, is a grand way to get to know the town. The same turquoise Caribbean waxes the same powdery, white sand at Playa as it does at Cancún but, with an offshore reef and Cozumel to break the waves, the surf is usually more gentle. The short distance to the reef means good snorkeling and gear is available for rent at any of the dive shops on the beach, as well as lockers and showers. The shops, of course, also offer scuba diving, which they claim is the best in the Mexican Caribbean. Diving usually works up an appetite and Playa bustles with places to sate it.
