Cancun Destination

 |
Located on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo, Cancún is divided into two distinct areas: the Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) on the “7”-shaped Cancún island and El Centro (Downtown) on the mainland. The two are linked by bridges at Playa Linda and Punta Nizuc while the vast Nichupté lagoon spreads out between them. To the north and east of the Hotel Zone, the gentle turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea wash up on 25 Kilometers (15.5 mi.) of powdery-white sandy beaches, lazing in a privileged manner under an all-year-long,shiny sun. The unusual formation of Cancún Island means that sunbathers and swimmers alike have access to two types of beach, each with its own magic. The beaches that extend from the beginning of the Hotel Zone to Punta Cancún fringe the Bahía de Mujeres (Women’s Bay) and the sheltered stretch of water between Cancún and Isla Mujeres, are ideal for all kinds of watersports and for swimmers of all levels of proficiency.
The most energetic will not be disappointed with Cancún. The resort is one of the watersports capitals of the world, and local lmarinas make optimum use of the Caribbean sea and the still waters of the Nichupté lagoon. Travelers can opt to go fishing, sailing, jet skiing, windsurfing, water-skiing,snorkeling,or scuba diving. The list of options is endless.
What could be better than a day spent cruising the Caribbean? Excursions are available to the nearby islands of Isla Mujeres, Cozumel and the wildlife sanctuary of Isla Contoy. If you want to visit Isla Mujeres, cruises, water taxis and shuttles bound for the island depart from Playa Linda, Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol. Jungle and lagoon tours also offer visitors the opportunity to discover some of the area’s exotic bird life.
Most visitors take at least a day’s break from the beach to explore southern Quintana Roo. Interesting side-trip options include the Rivera Maya and of course, the archaeological sights in Quintana Roo and its surrounding states. Cancún is the gateway to the Maya World, southeastern México and Central America were inhabited by the Maya; an ancient civilization considered one of the most advanced cultures ever to have flourished in the world.
Visitors to Cancún can explore their magnificent legacy of majestic pyramids, palaces and temples at sites like Tulum on the Caribbean coast, Chichén Itzá and Uxmal in Yucatán, or travel even farther afield to Palenque, Chiapas in México, or Tikal in the neighboring country of Guatemala.
Archeologists could have started their explorations of the Maya World right here in Cancún’s Hotel Zone. The island is dotted with the vestiges of a Maya Post-Classic (A.D.900-1521) settlement, whose inhabitants are thought to have earned their llivelihood for trade, agriculture and fishing. Part of these settlements can still be seen at El Rey archaeological zone, located on the lagoon side, on km 17 of the Hotel Zone (for more information, go to page 11).
After a day spent on the beach or exploring nearby archaeological sites, it is time to discover another element that makes up the Cancún experience complete with abundant shopping opportunities.
The Hotel Zone is dotted with ultramodern malls and more are planned for the future. These air-conditioned havens from the tropical heat are filled with exclusive boutiques, perfumeries, up-market jewelers, arts and crafts galleries and T-shirt stores. Worth shopping around for are designer label goods, imported glass, ceramics, watches, leather goods and perfumes, cosmetics, silver, handicrafts and much more.
There is nothing capricious about Cancún’s origins; little more than four decades ago, Cancún was just a Mayan name, a deserted sun drenched piece of land full of hermit crabs or scarlet macaws. Now, it is a resort where you could keep busy 24 hours a day with the varied rank of activities and tours that are available.
A destination created by man for man, with plenty to do, oriented to all needs and budgets, with hundreds of options for every taste, from designer’s brand stores to the hottest night clubs and exotic restaurants and still growing at a phenomenal rate.
Any good businessman will tell you that to stay afloat, you have to be both flexible and realistic; you have to adapt to an everchanging world and market and if you’re real sharp, you can lead the pack. Mixed metaphors aside, that’s the story of Cancún in a nutshell: an entity able to reinvent itself to triumph over any defeat.
In the last years Cancún went to over 28,000 rooms, most hotel zone properties have world class convention facilities and not as an afterthought, but as a major draw to prospective guests (timeshare and all inclusive operations generally excluded). Most hotels offer from 10,980 to 50,000 square feet of meeting space with special set ups, and the newest world class support services providing the professionals to staff them running all kind of events as smoothly as possible. Becoming therefore a favorite destination to carry out conventions and exhibitions, chosen by prestigious international companies.
The Convention Center has been totally remodeled with thirteen column free salons which are divisible in 37 spaces on 152,852 square feet for meeting areas and there are major audio visual supply houses and top destination management companies to support the most demanding events.
The Cancun International Airport is the busiest in the country after Mexico City, receiving 1,030 direct commercial flights a month from all around the world, bringing people to this wonderful Caribbean destination straight from their hometowns.
Cancún is environmentally sensitive and perceived as such. It has several nature theme parks and many ecological reserves, including the 1.3 million acre Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
Few convention cities anywhere in the whole world can compete with the activity options offered by Cancún. Cancún is Mexico, the Caribbean and the gateway to ancient Maya World all at once. In fact, few destinations in the world offer so much, certainly none of our near competitors.
Cancún has been maintained in the vanguard by keeping a lid on prices and developing a service oriented mentality, working together, seeing each other as colleagues or partners with a similar goal, the success of Cancún. Every service having something unique to offer making it strong, never becoming stagnant and giving always a good reason to come back.
CANCUN DOWNTOWN THE OTHER PARADISE
With myriad restaurants, upbeat bars, discos, typical shops and handicrafts markets, el Centro, is a treat for the senses.
There is even more to Cancún than pearly white beaches, wild discos and fine restaurants. Just a few minutes from the familiar comforts of the Hotel Zone is an opportunity to experience a friendly place where people gather to shop, dine, dance or just delight in the lively local atmosphere. With traditional restaurants and eateries, upbeat bars, discos, typical shps and handicraft markets, El Centro (Downtown) is a treat for the senses.
The main street in Downtown, Cancún is Tulum avenue. Here you can finish your shopping, change money, pick up extra items you’ll need for your vacation, relax in a quiet café, stroll through a tranquil park, visit a lounge, seek bargains at an outdoor market or simply take in the sights and sounds of this Mexican metropolis. Right on the avenue is the Ki-Huic, a giant, blocklong market resembling a middle-eastern bazaar. It has an extensive array of gift ideas, everything from T shirts to jewelry. Ki-Huic’sgrowth was unplanned, and its knick knack-laden aisles are a labyrinth in which more than one tourist has gotten lost.
When it’s time for lunch, the options are endless. Familiar “just like home” restaurant franchises, first-rate Mexican restaurants and international eateries offer everlasting cuisine options at great prices.
Visitors exploring one block west of Tulum Avenue will come across the Parque de las Palapas, a folksy square ringed by restaurants, taco vendors and a church. You can also see the public outdoor amphitheater than was recently rebuilt to perform school plays, folkloric shows and regional dance productions. Travelers exploring further west just a few more blocks will come to the commercial area called Mercado 28 (Market 28), Cancún’s busiest local market. This zone exemplifies an authentic Mexican town, were you might find taco stands, fruit drinks, mole (chicken in a chile with chocolate sauce) from Oaxaca, pollo pibil (chicken seasoned with achiote, a local seasoning) from Mérida and carnitas (fried pork) from Michoacán for sale. If you have not been to a market, you don’t know the real México: it is here that locals stock up on fruits, vegetables, meat, shellfish, plastic articles, cleaning soaps and assorted household items.
When it’s time for dinner, there’s no need to look any further than Downtown. Intimate dining rooms, up-beat cafes featuring live music and fun snacking places are just a few of the many alternatives. Of course, delicious seafood is fresh and plentiful. After dinner, check out El Centro’s sizzling nightlife.
If you’re looking for handicrafts, México’s variety ranges from everyday dishes, flowerpots and toys, to decorative pieces like feather art, masks and intricately wrought silver-worthy of exhibition in a museum. In the latter category is the Tree of Life, a clay piece through which the artisan expresses a very personal interpretation of the biblical Fall from the Garden of Eden.
Beginning with a central trunk, from which intertwining branches “grow”, the artist fashions a tree creating thick “foliage” with clay flowers and leaves that are stuck onto wires and inserted all over. At the base, just where the tree starts to branch out, clay figures representing Adam (easily identified by the strategically placed fig leaf) and Eve are usually placed. All the other elements of the tree-which have a very special symbolic meaning for each individual artisan-derive from the craftsperson’s creativity and imagination.
